Job Description: Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT)

The Lockport Township Fire Protection District is committed to maintaining a highly reliable

fleet to support emergency response operations in a growing fleet maintenance program. The Emergency Vehicle Technician plays a critical role in ensuring the safety of personnel and the community through proactive maintenance and rapid repair of essential equipment.


Position Title: Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT)

Department: Fleet Maintenance / Support Services

Reports To: Deputy Chief of Administration / Fleet Manager (or designee)


Position Summary

The Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) is responsible for the inspection, maintenance,

diagnosis, and repair of all fire district apparatus and support vehicles. This includes fire engines, ladder trucks, ambulances, staff vehicles, and specialized equipment. The EVT ensures all vehicles are maintained in a state of readiness to support emergency response operations safely and efficiently.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Perform preventative maintenance, inspections, and repairs on fire apparatus,

ambulances, and district vehicles in accordance with NFPA standards, manufacturer

guidelines, and departmental policies.

• Diagnose mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and electronic issues using appropriate

diagnostic tools and software.

• Maintain and repair diesel and gasoline engines, transmissions, braking systems, steering,

suspension, and exhaust systems.

• Service and troubleshoot fire-specific systems including:

o Pumps and pump controls

o Aerial devices

o Foam systems

o Emergency lighting and sirens

• Perform annual pump testing and assist with aerial ladder testing and certifications.

• Maintain accurate records of maintenance, repairs, inspections, and parts inventory.

• Coordinate with outside vendors for specialized repairs or warranty work.

• Ensure all tools, equipment, and workspaces are maintained in a clean and safe condition.

• Respond to emergency breakdowns and provide on-scene or roadside repairs as needed.

• Assist with specification review, evaluation, and acceptance testing of new apparatus.

• Maintain compliance with OSHA safety standards and departmental safety policies.


Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.

• Minimum of 3–5 years of experience in heavy-duty truck or emergency vehicle

maintenance.

• Valid Illinois Driver’s License (CDL preferred or ability to obtain within a specified

timeframe).

• Ability to obtain Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) certification within a defined

period.


Preferred Qualifications

• Current Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) Certification(s) (Fire Apparatus,

Ambulance, Electrical, etc.).

• ASE certifications (Medium/Heavy Truck preferred).

• Experience working with fire apparatus and EMS vehicles.

• Knowledge of NFPA 1911, 1917, and related standards.

• Experience with computer-based diagnostic systems and fleet management software.

• Welding and fabrication experience is a plus.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Strong mechanical and electrical diagnostic skills.

• Working knowledge of hydraulic and pneumatic systems.

• Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and wiring diagrams.

• Strong attention to detail and commitment to safety.

• Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks.

• Effective communication and teamwork skills.


Physical Requirements

• Ability to lift and carry up to 75 lbs.

• Ability to work in confined spaces, climb ladders, and perform tasks requiring bending,

kneeling, and standing for extended periods.

• Ability to work in various environmental conditions, including extreme temperatures.


Work Schedule

• Typical schedule: Monday–Friday, with occasional evenings, weekends, or on-call

responsibilities as needed to support emergency operations.


Salary Range

$70,000 – $105,000 annually, depending on certifications, qualifications, and experience.

• Entry-level (minimal certifications): $70,000 – $80,000

• Mid-level (some EVT/ASE certifications): $80,000 – $92,000

• Advanced (multiple EVT/ASE certifications, extensive experience): $92,000 – $105,000
